Yellow crookneck squash
June 8th, 2008 by Brianna
Our first yellow crookneck squash of the summer:
Nathan was kind enough to take the photo for me. I wanted to slice the squash and cook it as soon as I harvested it.
I hope we harvest lots more squash this summer, but borers already got one of the other plants. Bah.

Pretty. My zucchini just put out its first bloom, but it is female, with no males blooming :<. I think I’ll have to wait longer for mine.
Hope you see some male blooms on your plants soon.

Congratulations, we don’t even have blooms yet.

We were just about to pick squash from our plants when we went away for a few days. When we came back the plants were all hopelessly prostrate. I guess I’ll be waiting until September and trying again.
Yes, this is a brutal summer for the veggie gardens. Better luck in the fall.

Lucky you - that squash is beautiful and I’m sure it was yummy, too. As I told Bonnie, the squash vine borers have done me in one time too many and I don’t plant squash as a result. Your posts make me wish I had tried!
Well, since I posted we’ve had an infestation of borers ourselves. We may only get a handful of squash before the plants succumb.

How should these be cooked, and how big should they be when harvested. I have 2 so far that are about a foot long.
