Blue passion flower

April 12th, 2008 by Brianna

The blue passion vine in our front yard has a handful of blooms on it, with many more buds preparing to open.

Passion flower blooms look almost otherworldy to me. The blooms on this vine smell a little like pineapple. Apparently the bumblebees enjoy them, too.

I’m on the verge of having killed my second passionflower. I’d like very much to have one survive. For aggressive/invasive vines, they just aren’t living up to my hopes. :) I’ve got a fence to fill, and I’m holding out hope that this is the vine to do it.

Heh, the vine I have is climbing up a palm tree next to it, and under the wooden privacy fence into the backyard. I haven’t done anything special for it–it seems to be happy all on its own. Good luck with your vine.

it looks like something from outer space.

Nathan suggested that the photo looks like a bee flying in to dock at some kind of fragrant blue and white space station.

Gorgeous. I love them…and have had a similar problem getting one established. (I suspect my dog Libby might like to eat them as much as the Gulf frittilaries). You’re making me jealous…

If it makes you feel any better, I can’t take any credit for the success of the vine. I didn’t even plant it myself–we inherited it from a PO.

What a splendid photo! I’ve been so tempted to try growing one of the hardier passionflowers here, at least inside, but haven’t quite psyched myself up enough. Not yet. Your photo, though, makes me pretty tempted.

Happy you like the photo. I think the bee makes it. :)

My passionvine is a purple one and it also looks otherworldly, but I can’t catch any fragrance - pineapple scent sounds lovely, Brianna!

The blooms on my vine are strongly scented. The vine grows next to a gate from the front yard into the back, so I’ve been catching the scent of the passion flowers as I’m going around the house into the backyard.

Wow, that’s both pretty and darned unusual. It always amazes me how things that look this complicated can come up from the earth.

Beautiful picture of a gorgeous flower! The butterflies flock to it, too.
When you have a chance, stop my my blog. I’ve left an award for you there.

I haven’t seen any butterflies on it yet–I’ll keep my eyes open for them. *off to pick up my award on Cultivating Paradise*

Pineapple? That’s so cool. I wish I had more luck with passionflowers. I’m with Rachel– I’ve killed both I tried.

Lovely picture, by the way. Now I’m tempted to make attempt number three…

Thanks, Lori. Good luck with your third when you try it.

    Beautiful photo!
I just purchased my first Blue Passion over the weekend. I’ve put it in the ground in a sunny spot with well draining, sandy soil. I hope I have better luck than I did with Gardenias. I think I killed about 10 of them before I got it right. The Blue Passion is not looking very happy right now but I’m hoping it’ll perk up over the next few days as it get acclimated to it’s new home.
    Again, great photo!

Thanks, Angie, and good luck with your vine.

I have a Passion Flower in my yard that is growing on the fence and it is 12 ft long 4 ft high with hundreds of blooms on it.
I am wondering where the seeds are in the blooms so that I can start more plants. If you know please email me at katndan4e1@verizon.net. thank you so much
